Background and Inspiration
Erin has been practicing as a Physiotherapist for almost 8 years and is passionate about community health. Her journey began at the University of Waterloo, where she worked as a receptionist and physiotherapy volunteer assistant. "What began as a way to gain work experience soon became a passion to apply my knowledge and empower others through their recovery," she explains.
Erin pursued a Master's Degree in Physiotherapy at Manchester Metropolitan University in the UK, gaining extensive experience in the NHS and volunteering with sports teams. "These experiences allowed me to recognize the importance of physiotherapy that is tailored to the individual and does not rush through an appointment," she says.
In 2015, Erin returned to Canada, working in private orthopedic clinics and noticing a need for personalized, collaborative care. "I founded Embark Physical Therapy & Wellness to ensure that, in a fast-paced world, we remember to slow down when it comes to our health and well-being."
Business Details
Embark offers Physiotherapy and Massage Therapy services, treating various conditions such as neck pain, back pain, sports injuries, and chronic pain. "We remind our clients that working with a physiotherapist and massage therapist can be pivotal in improving your overall quality of life," Erin explains.
What sets Embark apart is its commitment to personalized care and community. "We are not your fast-paced, impersonal clinic," Erin emphasizes. "We deeply care about Kitchener-Waterloo and have a vision for the future of improved healthcare."
Vision and Goals
Erin envisions expanding Embark's services to include mental health care. "We aim to bring on a counsellor and registered psychotherapist by the end of 2024," she explains. In five years, Erin hopes to open a second location, extending these essential services to Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge.
Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
"Surround yourself with those who believe in your vision and help you build it," Erin advises. She credits the LiftOff program and her coach and mentor, Ajoa Mintah, for their support. "Embark Physical Therapy & Wellness would not be opening if not for the incredible guidance I received."
Erin acknowledges her unique position in the community. "I am the only Black, female Physiotherapist and Clinic Owner in Kitchener-Waterloo. For a long time, I doubted that I could start a business, but the right support made me realize it's possible."
For resources, Erin recommends "The Lean Startup" and Futurepreneur's free workshops. "LiftOff has been invaluable, and Ajoa Mintah, my coach and mentor, has been a true blessing," she adds.
