Everything You Need To Know About Writing A Great LiftOff Application

One way to stand out in a pool of applicants is to write a compelling application that gets your reader excited about your business idea and separates you from the rest. Filling out an application about your business might seem simple but here are a few tips that we guarantee will get your application noticed.

  • First of all, start early, don’t rush.

  • Building a strong application takes time. You don’t have to spend hours writing your application, but you do want to leave some time to review, maybe get feedback from friends or mentors, and make corrections.

  • Be very clear about what problem you’re solving or the market opportunity you plan to take advantage of to launch a venture. What makes your approach to solving the problem different? Be sure to capture that.

  • Your responses should focus on explaining the core of the business or idea in succinct, precise, and clear language. An application that is too long, full of buzzwords, or uses a lot of technical jargon with no explanation will get noticed for all the wrong reasons. If it helps, pretend you’re explaining your idea to a 5-year-old.

  • A strong application depends on solid preparation and a deep understanding of your venture and the opportunity or gap in the market you’re seeking to exploit. Prior research or feedback from existing or prospective customers can indicate that your venture is viable. Don’t be shy, show us the hard work you’ve already put in.

  • Finally, seek feedback. Instead of completing your application in one sitting, type out your answers and have friends or mentors you trust read through and provide constructive criticism. Which parts didn’t they understand? What got them excited about the idea? What questions still need to be answered to make your case stronger? Try to take their feedback without getting offended - your application will be better for it.

We have tried to make the LiftOff Program Application as simple and conversational as possible, however, if necessary, research any terms or words or questions you don’t understand and feel free to email us if you still need support. Do allow enough time before the deadline (March 4th at 11:59 pm EST) to ensure that when we respond to you, you have enough time to incorporate our feedback/clarifications.

Here’s a breakdown of the application:

About Yourself

  • The first six (6) questions are straightforward. Be careful to enter accurate contact information so we can reach you.

Founding Members

  • We want to know the venture’s founding member(s), as they are important to the ability to execute on the underlying idea or business. If your venture is selected for the program, you and your partner(s) can join LiftOff as a team! Many hands make the work light.

About Your Business

  • These questions are the core of the application review process as they relate to the idea or venture being evaluated, including your ability to coherently articulate the market opportunity, competitive landscape, your expertise and ability to execute.

Interest in the LiftOff Program

  • The LiftOff program is competitive with limited spots available. This is your opportunity to stand out from other applicants by clearly demonstrating your passion and why you should be selected. We encourage you to define your expectations of LiftOff, and how you will be an asset to the program.

  • These are also straightforward demographic questions.

Pro Tip: Refer to the Lean Canvas, which is a venture-building tool to help you streamline your thoughts and descriptions. This could help you sharpen your responses for the core questions of the application.
